Freshwater is an essential resource for life, but it is becoming increasingly precious in the face of climate change and growing human needs. Agriculture, industry, domestic consumption: water is everywhere, yet its availability is diminishing. How can we better protect it and use it responsibly?

Precious fresh water: a resource under pressure

On Earth, freshwater represents only around 3% of total water, and two-thirds of this is trapped in the form of ice. In France, 66% of drinking water comes from groundwater and 34% from surface water (rivers, lakes). However, our distribution system is subject to considerable losses: every year, over a billion cubic metres of water disappear due to leaks in the networks.

Climate change is exacerbating this pressure on water resources. Droughts are on the increase, affecting river and groundwater levels, while demand for water continues to rise.

Who uses the most water in France?

The breakdown of freshwater use in France is as follows:

  • 58% for agriculture, in particular for crop irrigation.
  • 26% for the production of drinking water for domestic use.
  • 12% for the energy sector, notably power plant cooling.
  • 4% for industry, including the agri-food and tourism sectors.

In our homes, drinking water is mainly used for personal hygiene (39%), toilets (20%), and washing clothes and dishes (22%), while only 1% is used for drinking.

How can we reduce our water consumption?

Faced with these challenges, it is essential to adopt simple and effective actions to save water on a daily basis:

At home

  • Take short showers (less than 5 minutes).
  • Install flow reducers on faucets and showers.
  • Use a dual-flush toilet to reduce consumption.
  • Run washing machines and dishwashers only when full.
  • Adopt our tips for using less water in the kitchen 😉

In the garden

  • Install a rainwater collector to water plants.
  • Water in the evening or early morning to limit evaporation.
  • Choose drought-resistant plants.
  • Reduce lawn mowing to reduce the need for watering.

Working together to preserve water

Preserving water is a collective responsibility that requires efforts at all levels: individual, agricultural, industrial and institutional.

By adopting simple gestures and encouraging sustainable practices, we can all help to guarantee access to this essential resource for future generations.
